Organizations

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is a regional nonprofit organization that builds and fosters partnerships to restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers.
Center for Watershed Protection - a non-profit corporation that provides local governments, activists, and watershed organizations around the country with the technical tools for protecting streams, lakes and rivers.
Clean Virginia Waterways - a state-wide, nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to improving the cleanliness and quality of Virginia's waterways by promoting citizen stewardship. CVW organizes volunteers to remove debris from Virginia's shorelines, waterways and beaches. Information on the amount and types of debris is collected and cataloged.

Ducks Unlimited - world's largest private, non-profit waterfowl and wetland conservation organization. 
Friends of the Rappahannock -  promoting the conservation, protection, and enjoyment of the natural, cultural, recreational, scenic and historical values of the Rappahannock River and its tributaries.
Izaac Walton League of America - information and programs dedicated to the environment, including Save Our Streams, the American Wetlands Campaign, and the Clean Air Now Campaign.
Piedmont Environmental Council - promoting and protecting the Virginia Piedmont's rural economy, natural resources, history and beauty.
Rapp FLOW  (Rappahannock Friends and Lovers of Our Watershed) - The mission of RappFLOW is to help preserve, protect, conserve and restore water resources and Rappahannock County’s watersheds. RappFLOW hosts a series of educational events open to the public free of charge.
Upper Rappahannock River Stream Monitoring Program - a network of volunteers who conduct biological and chemical monitoring of streams in the Upper Rappahannock River Basin.
Virginia Save Our Streams Program - a non-profit non-governmental organization that works with community groups, regional organizations, and government agencies in partnerships that promote the health of Virginia’s waterways.

ChesSIE (Chesapeake Science on the Internet for Educators) - A resource center and communications hub supporting watershed-wide K-12 Chesapeake Bay science education.
The Electronic Naturalist - An on-line education program providing a weekly environmental education unit. Each unit has artwork, text, activities, additional web sites, plus online access to a professional naturalist. Two reading levels are available for grades K-3 (Quick Read) and 4-8 (Full Read).
The Environmental Literacy Council - A site with useful information and links to other web sites on a variety of environmental topics including land & climate, water, ecosystems,  energy, food, and environment & society. There are also links to resources designed for teachers and students.
Envirothon A national natural resources competition for high school students.
Environmental Studies - Interesting information on seven topics and issues, including Water Studies and Wetlands, appropriate for high school level students, or as material for teachers.
Geography Action: Habitats - A National Geographic page with educational information and activities about such habitats as forests, oceans and deserts. Includes a photo gallery with screensavers you can download, games and lesson plans for educators.
Izaac Walton League of America - The "Education and Outreach" section on the Isaac Walton League home page provides links to educational topics, which also lend themselves to research and other projects-oriented activities. Topics include the American Wetlands Campaign, Clean Air Now Campaign, Fish Kill Advisory Network, Midwest Power Plant Campaign, Outdoor Ethics Program, Save Our Streams Program, and the Sustainability Education Program. The Young Ikes section consists of material specifically developed for students.
Kid's Cave - A Virginia Department of Environmental Quality website devoted to environmentally related topics for students, including Places to Visit (a list of places to visit in Virginia and surrounding area to learn about the environment first hand), Kids in Action (stories of successful projects kids have undertaken), Figure It Out (quizzes on rivers, litter and wetlands), Pollution Solutions (suggestions for projects kids can undertake), and the E-Brary (a collection of fact sheets on such topics as drought, hazardous waste, and recycling).
The Learning Web - This USGS natural resources educational resource for students has links to 50 great sites, including such topics as Acid Rain, Eruptions of Mt. St Helens: Past, Present and Future, Biology Kid's Corner, Kid's Butterfly Site, and Earthshots: satellite pictures of environmental change.

Polluted Runoff (Nonpoint Source Pollution) - This Environmental Protection Agency page has links to numerous fact sheets, articles and other sources of information about nonpoint source pollution, including "Do's and Don'ts Around the Home", "Information for Students and Educators" and a Kid's Page with games and other educational activities.
Portage County Groundwater - Basic information, lesson plans and curriculum materials on groundwater, focused on building awareness, knowledge, and skills. Also, steps that can be taken for individual and group action in the political process and/or educating the public.
Robocow - A fun and educational animation illustrating common water quality problems in agricultural communities and their BMP solutions. Made available by Canada's Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration.
Science Learning Network - Links to information and activities for science students K-12, including such topics as migration of Monarch Butterflies, hurricanes, the dynamics of water, and energy concepts.
Surf Your Watershed - This Environmental Protection Agency website is fully interactive: just enter your zip code, city or county to view and/or print a map of your watershed, complete with water quality indications. It also includes a searchable database of environmental websites.
U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Science for Schools - Information on many aspects of water, along with pictures, data, maps, and an interactive center where you can share opinions and test your water knowledge. 
Virginia Naturally Educational Resources - This site includes the Virginia's Natural Resources Education Guide, a curriculum supplement for educators full of information, activities and resources for elementary teachers, and the Environmental Education Directory, a searchable database of over 300 programs, services and materials.
Virginia Cooperative Extension Educational Resources - Information on numerous topics related to natural resources and the outdoors, including environmental management, forestry and wildlife. (materials for 9-12)
Virginia's Water Resources - Information and activities for teachers to support interdisciplinary and problem-based teaching about watersheds, water quality, stewardship, and management issues, correlated to Virginia's SOLs. Supports the Chesapeake 2000 Agreement's goal to "provide a meaningful Bay or stream outdoor experience for every school student in the watershed before graduation from high school."
